MaryAnn Skocik, age 83, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, in Columbus, OH with family by her side. She was devoted to her family, as they were to her. She had an incredible impact on those who knew her; her positivity, light-heartedness, and gracious nature were inspirational. She was a keen listener and a faithful supporter, always maintaining a healthy perspective and shining like a light that drew others to her.
Raised in Tiltonsville, OH, Mary Ann graduated from St. John Central High School in Bellaire, OH, and Ohio University where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and guidance counseling. After college, Mary Ann was committed to serving the United States of America, starting her career as a teacher for the Department of Defense (DOD) Dependent Schools in Kassel, Germany. After returning to the U.S., she pioneered women’s leadership roles at the DOD. She was the first female Chief of the Employment and Management Assistance Division in DCASR, Los Angeles; Director of Civilian Personnel in DCASR, Atlanta; Director of Civilian Personnel in the Department Supply Center, Columbus; and she was inducted into the Defense Logistics Agency 2010 Hall of Fame.
Her lifelong passion for travel began while teaching in Germany and she continued traveling the world with friends and family while living in the U.S. Proud of her Hungarian heritage, one of her favorite trips to take with family was visiting relatives in Budapest. Mary Ann instilled the travel bug in her nieces, nephews, and their children. When any of them traveled, they sent “Aunt” postcards and photos to share their experiences.
She was passionate about the City of Columbus, committing two decades to the Rotary Club of Bexley and many years volunteering for Senior Options of Franklin County and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
She is preceded in death by her parents Stephen and Frances (Fannie) Skocik; brothers Stephen and Joseph Skocik; and sister-in-law Linda Skocik. Mary Ann is survived by her brother Ed (Caroline) Skocik; best friend and partner Bill Weisman; nieces and nephews Madeleine (Robert) Nikolaus, Stephanie (James) Ivey, Paula (Todd) Rieck, Michael (Mary) Skocik, Jennifer (Robert) Eversole, Matthew Skocik and Jennifer Johnson, Mark Skocik, Christopher (Kristina) Skocik, and David (Yvonne) Mancino; many great nieces, nephews and one great, great niece.
The family thanks Cranberry Park Assisted Living for their loving care these last eight years; Dr. David McClure and Mary Ann’s entire medical team; Kobacker House for providing comfort and peace when she was ready to see her heavenly Father; and St. Timothy Church for delivering communion each week. As a devoted Catholic, Mary Ann’s faith gave her strength to deal with life’s most difficult times.
Mary Ann’s family appreciates everyone’s prayers and thoughtfulness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Franklin County Senior Options https://officeonaging.org/fcso/default.aspx, Helping Hands Ministry https://www.peaceumc.org/care/helping-hands or a charity of your choice.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
