John Whitaker Obituary

John Whitaker, 69, of Adena, formally of Smithfield, was known in high school days as “Whit”, his coal mine days as “Big John”, and his trucking days as “Bubbles”. John passed away suddenly on October 17, 2018.He was owner/operator of J&M Trucking of Adena, LLC.

He was born January 6, 1949 the son of the late Carol (McGrail) and Charles Whitaker Sr.John was a past president of the Adena Lions Club and a past president of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union 1360. He also served as a president of the Harrison County Girls Softball League and coach for the Adena Softball League for many years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Charles “Butch” Whitaker Jr., Thomas Whitaker, a sister Mary Jane Boyd.

John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Monica (Sliva) Whitaker, three daughters Joi Gorlock of New Alexandria, Tracy (Jeff) Vitek of Rayland, Amy (Mike) Olinski of Colerain.He was blessed with six grandchildren, Shayla, Shane, and Shelby Gorlock, Jesse Vitek, Cole and Corey Olinski. He is also survived by a sister Patty (Bob) Grant of Jacksonville Florida.

John’s two favorite things were his family and his Ohio State Buckeyes.He was an avid OSU fan and never missed a game.Unless it was for family.John was also a huge fan of anything and everything his grandkids did.He never missed games, dances, matches, pig show or whatever his grandkids had going on at the time.You couldn’t miss how proud he was of his family.

John will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.Friends will be received at The Borkoski Funeral Home in Adena on Sunday October 21 from 2-8 pm.Services will be held Monday at 11am with Msgr Kolesar Officiating.Burial will take place at New Alexandria Cemetery following the Service.
